Online transition experience for Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business student

Meet Nickolai Birjoo – a first-year student of the Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business (BISB).

As a result of COVID-19 all students had to transition from face to face to online learning to facilitate the continuation of teaching and learning. This transition fortunately was smooth based on the technologies that Lok Jack GSB had in place. See below Nickolai’s experience for online learning.

“To put it bluntly, the online learning experience, born from necessity, has been an easily accessible way to stay on top of my education throughout a time where there is no in-house option due to unforeseen circumstances. Quickly implemented, smoothly operated and dynamically adapted to the needs of the pupils – I would say my favourite part of the experience has been how continuous it has been, bridging the offline and online gap. Due to the administrative efforts of program advisors and the IT staff, I am able to work in a virtual class that is almost exactly the same as a physical one, kilometres away from the campus. The professors have not missed a step when issuing class work and interacting with their students, making it extremely easy to carry on with any given subject. Lok Jack GSB has really prepared for such an easy transition with three distinct online learning platforms, which each offer features that aid in the completion of the courses offered. All lecturers have been quite interactive with the students, an aspect of the online class that has not gone unnoticed. The access to such personal interaction has made some lectures more digestible for some students, which is a welcomed comfort for working in such a remote environment. It is as easy as holding a button when a student wishes to voice any opinions or concerns, another facet of classroom life that has not been sacrificed. I am truly impressed by how well the online lectures have been handled by the school, especially under such short notice.”

Why is it a GREAT IDEA to pursue a Business Degree?

Selecting a degree can be difficult, hence, you want to select something that can be valuable in the long-term as well as flexible in an instance where you want to switch fields. Check out five reasons why a degree in business is the best route of study below:

Business majors have more job security than other majors because they are needed in virtually all industries. Whether in a banking, manufacturing or, energy sector, all industries need people with business acumen to function and prosper. This will always keep the demand for business majors relatively high, even in tough economic times.

Alumnus of Master of Marketing guest lecture students of Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business

Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business Student Ambassadors

Meet the Student Ambassadors for the Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business programme (BISB).

Student ambassador of the BISB programme are required to:

  • Be an exemplary student and adhere to the Business Schools’ code of conduct, behavioural and dress code policies
  • Maintain good academic standing with a GPA of at least 3.0 on cumulative coursework
  • Represent and participate in the Business Schools’ on and off campus events
  • Be knowledgeable of basic facts about the UWI-ALJGSB and the BISB programme
  • Promote the Business School and in particular the BISB programme
  • Contribute content to the Business Schools’ website and other promotional material

 

Benefits of being a student ambassador:

  • Build transferable skills such as: leadership, team work, problem solving, critical thinking, written and verbal communication, confidence and public speaking for future employment

International Guest Lecturers for Self-Awareness and Leadership course for Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business

They covered content on Self-awareness and Leadership.

Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business Service-Learning Project at Edinburgh Special Needs Centre

As part of the curriculum for the Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business programme, students have to partake in socially responsible activities. Cohort one had the opportunity to interact with members of the Edinburgh Special Needs Centre. 

They got a chance to engage with the students through games and certain subject areas. One of the students who volunteered stated: “Whether someone is disabled or not, each child has a purpose in life and also a talent in this school such as Terence, who is a great singer or my brother who enjoys football and cricket. Each person develops a certain skill and ability that gives them a purpose to lead a happy life.”

Another student’s feedback was, “this created leadership development for the community. I would always remember teaching this young boy, Terrance, an amazing singer and great at Maths. I taught him how to read, understand and then attempt fractions and number questions.”

BISB Student visit to Cocoa Estate

Students of the Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business programme (BISB), Jeroam DesVignes, Maryanna Samuel and Navindra Jaggernauth volunteered at the Ortinola Great House on November 24th, 2019.

These students are also ambassadors of the BISB programme, they assisted students from Semester at Sea as they experienced the chocolate making tour. Special thanks to Nikita from Ortinola Estates Ltd and lecturer Tobias Frenking.

Lok Jack GSB awards NSSEC top three and divisional winners scholarship

The UWI-Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business continues to strive towards their objective of being a school that contributes to innovation and youth entrepreneurship development by being the proud educational partner of the National Secondary School Entrepreneurship Competition (NSSEC), a seven week entrepreneurship simulation which took place at their North campus. There were over 600 students that worked hard to complete the simulation and learned skills that will last a lifetime.
NSSEC was a business simulation competition where youths acquired business training and development. They gained hands-on experience that helped them to put into practice classroom theory while using premier business simulation training. The competition was administered using a business simulation software called: Innovative Learning Solutions’ Marketplace Live (ILS) which is synced with the authentic learning model of the Lok Jack GSB.
Being a proud educational partner of the NSSEC for its third year, Lok Jack GSB presented the top three winners with 75%, 30% and 20% scholarships and 10% scholarships for the divisional winners for the Bachelors of International and Sustainable Business for the year in which they’ll be eligible to begin.
 
We’ll like to extend our  congratulations to the winners of the scholarships on their victory at the National Secondary School 
Entrepreneurship Competition. Bishop Anstey POS group 2 (1st place) Cowen Hamilton group 2 (2nd place) and Bishop Anstey group 1 (third place).
As the Lok Jack GSB continues to diversify and expand as a school we’ll continue to partner with institutions that promote such developments with our youths.

Semester at Sea

Every voyage, the Semester at Sea International Field Programs Office works with in-country partners, UWI-Arthur Lok Jack Global School of Business (UWI-ALJGSB), to recruit one to two outstanding university students from select port countries on the voyage itinerary to act as Interport Students (IPS). These students travel to the previous port on the itinerary, board our ship – the MV World Odyssey, and sail with the shipboard community to their port country. Two students were selected from our Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business programme, Julia Harripersad and Okera Duncan. They will sail from Brazil on November 15 to arrive in Trinidad on November 24, 2019.

The primary role of the IPS is to act as a peer in cultural exchange, and provide shipboard staff and faculty with a native informant deeply familiar with the port country or city. During their time aboard the MV World Odyssey, Julia and Okera may do any or all of the following:

Responsibilities: 

  • Participate as a visitor in shipboard courses – offer personal insights from their experience growing up, living, working, and attending school in their home country
  • Share meals with student clubs or other members of the shipboard community
  • Assist the Field Office and Administrative Team with questions pertaining to their home country
  • Give a presentation on a topic of cultural or logistical interest or a topic of their passion / choosing (ex: things voyagers can see and do in port, an upcoming holiday celebration in their home country, an interesting community service initiative at their university, different types of local or regional cuisine, etiquette, etc.)
  • Host informal language lessons (if applicable)
  • Potentially assist a professor or trip liaison on an excursion during the first two days the ship is docked in their home country (depending upon schedules and professor preference)

Students will benefits from an intercultural academic exchange experience to add to one’s resume/CV as well as have the opportunity to meet peers, experience a different type of university life and culture, and make connections with faculty in a variety of disciplines.

Ms. Renee Thomas, Programme Director of Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business

Ms. Renee Thomas is the Programme Director of the Bachelor of International and Sustainable Business at UWI-ALJGSB, she has over 15 years’ marketing and sales experience in the banking, distribution, media and education industries. As Programme Director for the Bachelor of International & Sustainable Business, she works closely with faculty and other key stakeholders to create a positive learning environment for students while maintaining the Business School’s quality standards through the design, delivery, and evaluation of the programme. Ms Thomas outlines below the value the undergraduate programme provides to students and some advice to persons that are uncertain on their next step!

The BISB programme aims to prepare students with the foundation required for launching and leading successful businesses as well as the development and running of businesses or business units with directions towards innovation, international expansion, sustainability and growth.

Students will:

  • Focus on the problems and challenges of business and society, while seeking to address unmet needs
  • Understand the evolving world of business
  • Develop the skillsets to operate with self-confidence as entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs
  • Launch and grow new businesses or ensure the sustainability of existing corporations through the creation of innovative add-on products and services

Why should someone do this programme?

  1. The programme prepares you to become an entrepreneur (someone that starts a business at taking on financial risks in hope of making a profit) or an intrapreneur (employee who develops innovative ideas, products or projects within a company)
  2. Practical learning environment. Classrooms are a mix of traditional learning (students listen while lecturers teach) and authentic learning (guest speakers, games, case study discussions, debates, group projects and presentations and simulations)
  3. Learning approach was designed to help students:
    1. Develop a global, entrepreneurial and sustainable mindset.
    2. Become critical thinkers, social activist, leaders, problem solvers
  1. Lecturers are a mix of academic and industry specialists
  2. Business Spanish is delivered every semester to prepare students for international business opportunities in non-English territories
  3. The specialisations (Technology & Operations Management, Strategy & Project Execution and Disruptive Innovation & Entrepreneurship) are designed to help students develop the capacity to innovate along the value chain in their own business or an existing organisation
  4.  Socially responsive projects that are executed as part of the core curriculum (for e.g. for your Self Awareness & Leadership course you will be identified/develop a community-based project and work on it for the duration of the course)
  5. The Capstone project integrates all the learnings of the programme. Students are required to solve a challenge or undertake an intervention in a sustainable manner for an existing organisation
  6. Access to the University of the West Indies facilities (library, gym, swimming pool, tennis court, clubs, social activities centre)

 

My advice to persons who are unsure about your next step upon completion of CSEC or CAPE

“If you find yourself uncertain about the area of business you want to study or the type of career you want to pursue, then the BISB programme is definitely for you! This programme was designed to allow students to dream big, find their passion, purpose and voice. You practice as you learn, giving you the ability to prepare yourself for the world of work.
