Today, the maritime industry in the Caribbean continues to be a strategically important and beneficial sector in terms of facilitating trade, economic growth, and long-term economic development, within and between countries. The maritime cluster remains very large in scale and scope. The sector comprises commercial cargo and trans-shipment ports, ship owners, ship brokers, finance and insurance companies, ship surveyors, ship registries, ship repair facilities, firms involved in marine construction, and Government regulators and administrators. More importantly firms and stakeholders operating in the maritime sector are constantly being driven to innovate, integrate and compete at an international level, as global trade patterns and consumer demands continue to shape and drive the industry forward. As a result of this there is increasing need to build management, leadership and technical capabilities at a global level within the maritime industry.
