IMBA Vanessa Boyce - June 2014
My Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business Experience in Tobago
In 2010 I began a journey to improve myself professionally. As a young university graduate with a few years of working experience, the need to continue the road of self-improvement was vital to ensure marketability in this highly competitive market.
The information sessions held by the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business (ALJGSB) and feedback from current and past students provided some guidance in making the decision to pursue studies at the institution; however it did not fully prepare me for the road ahead. Challenging, dynamic, professional and rewarding were some of the adjectives used to describe the program. What I have discovered is that the programs offered by ALJGSB also prepare you for the work world in a way that was never expected.
After enrolling in the International Masters in Business Administration I was immediately immersed into a period of continuous learning and self-development. The program did not only emphasize theory, but the practical application of everything that was taught. Every course drew from real life situations and current local, regional and international issues.
One such course which was very effective in integrating theory into practical situations was Corporate Turnaround, which was lectured by Dr. Rolph Balgobin. This course focused on identifying causes for business failure and identifying plans to turn the businesses around, once the viability of doing so has been established. In addition to written case studies, rather than only drawing on newspaper articles for local businesses in crises, on a weekly basis the class visited establishments that were experiencing problems and actively identified causes and solutions for these problems via silent observation, patronage of the establishments, and interviews with proprietors.
This was one in many courses that made my IMBA experience worthwhile. Pursuing the program is an investment; not only a financial investment but a physical, mental and social investment. With all investments returns are expected and with the IMBA, the returns are maximised when you are dedicated to obtaining success. If you are dedicated, determined and seek to stand among a cadre of highly qualified professionals who have graduated from the region’s leading business school, then the Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business is right for you.
