Critical thinking offers an extremely useful framework or intellectual endeavor that sorts the significant from the insignificant, assessing them severally and jointly, and arriving at a conclusion by the exercise of judgment. That endeavor is known as thinking, or that operation in which presents facts suggest other facts (or truths). But critical thinking also inheres a fundamental attribute that underscores "information transformation." This attribute is often described as meta-cognition or "thinking about thinking." Critical Thinking then is a deliberate meta-cognitive and cognitive (thinking) act whereby a person reflects on the quality of the reasoning process simultaneously while reasoning to a conclusion. The thinker has two equally important goals: coming to a solution and improving the way she or he reasons. Thus, the application of critical thinking skills is indispensable to intelligence analysis and at the same time, a robust technique in the analyst's toolkit.
This three-day workshop focuses on critical thinking as a particular way to improve intelligence analysis. It examines the concept of critical thinking, the structure of thought and the processes involved in overcoming intelligence analysts' mindset of biases and faulty cognition. It is particularly useful to security and criminal intelligence analysts, and to individuals in business who want to understand and improve their own thinking. Through lectures and case studies, participants will be able to apply critical thinking and hone their analytic skills.
The overall objective of the class is to enable participants to critically think about analysis and what analysts are tasked to analyse. A second objective is to provide them with a set of analytic tools that are useful to their analysis. At the end of the class participants will be equipped with a set of analytic skills and will have honed your critical thinking skills, allowing them to better function in the workplace.
This workshop is particularly useful to law enforcement personnel, security and criminal intelligence analysts, and to individuals in business who want to understand and improve their own thinking.
Upon completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Define the concepts of Critical Thinking and Intelligence Analysis
- Use critical thinking techniques to provide structure to your analytic reasoning
- Identify, describe, and employ methods for structured reasoning
- Demonstrate critical thinking proficiency through lecture and classroom participation
- Apply knowledge of critical thinking by using a set of analytic tools designed to hone your skills as an intelligence analyst
