MBA in Health Management Launched at Lok Jack GSB

Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business will offer an MBA in Health Management to students enrolling in its International Master of Business Administration Programme (IMBA) from September 2009.

The IMBA specialization in Health Management seeks to give students the broad knowledge base needed for managing and achieving effectiveness within a modern health sector. The idea for the specialization arose out of the growing urgency to address the educational and training needs of the health sector given its importance to human development, quality of life and national productivity. It underscores the School’s responsiveness to the needs of the society in which it operates and its continued quest for relevance to business, Government and civil society.

The specialization is designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health sector’s limited resources and train the necessary people needed to match the proposed expansion of the sector as outlined in the Vision 2020 Development Plan. As such, it includes the following seven (7) distinct, but related courses:

  • Foundations of Health Care Management
  • Service Quality in  Health Care
  • Human Resource Management in Health Services
  • Healthcare Accounting and Financial Management
  • Strategic Management
  • Health Economics / Economics of Health Care
  • Health Management Information Systems

Students must do at least five (5) of these courses in order to be awarded the specialisation in Health Management. Graduates of the programme are expected to be equipped with the skills for institutional strengthening and support for a sector which continues to be subjected to significant outward migration. It is expected that this programme will help to sustain the expansion and improvement of the human capital base of the sector going forward.

The International MBA programme is accredited by the UK’s Association of MBAs. Apart from the Health Management Specialisation, students enrolled in the IMBA may choose to specialize in Human Resource Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, International Finance, Energy Business Management and International Marketing Management.

Republic Bank Commercial Customer Business Development Programme

The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business in collaboration with Republic Bank Limited launched another dynamic Commercial Customer Business Programme at the School’s Mt. Hope Campus on April 28th 2009.

The four week programme is geared towards equipping business owners with viable new skills which, in today’s financial climate, are critical to a business’ competitivity and success. This was the sentiment expressed by Jacqueline Quamina, Acting General Manager, Republic Bank Limited, who addressed the participants at the launch. Quamina also indicated that the next step in the development for the participants was to become a part of a strong base of dynamic businesses which would help Trinidad and Tobago pull through the current downturn.

Nirmala Harrylal, Consulting Manager at the Lok Jack GSB, indicated that the current group would represent the sixth cohort to graduate from the business development programme. She also highlighted the School’s commitment to and collaboration with organisations like Republic Bank Limited in designing and developing business development intervention.

Perhaps the most encouraging of the speakers at the launch was Matthew Oliver, graduate of the Commercial Customer Business Programme. Oliver spoke as to the real world merits of the programme in areas of strategy, marketing, financial planning and understanding the local, regional and global environments. He praised the attention given by the programme’s facilitators to key aspects of business development and summed up his experience as a participant as “the way my business has moved toward a more successful future.”
