Chinese Business and Culture Week at the GSB

The Lok Jack GSB in collaboration with the Embassy of the People’s Republic of china hosted its 2nd Annual Chinese Business and Culture Week which began on Monday 14th May 2007.

The Chinese Business and Culture Week gives managers, senior executives and the general public an opportunity to experience and to appreciate the Chinese language, culture and way of life in order to better prepare them for doing business with China.

The Lok Jack GSB’s Chinese Culture Week events included the Opening ceremony which was attended by His Excellency George Maxwell Richards who delivered the feature address.
Addressing energy sector growth, President Richards expressed satisfaction with the remarkable growth in the energy sector over the last 25 years.
He commended the advances and leadership role taken by Trinidad and Tobago in the gas economies. Even though Trinidad is a small country which has limited resources in hydrocarbon, Richards highlighted that it represents only one third of the 1% of the world’s proven resources, Trinidad is endowed with a measure of petroleum and gas reserves which it has successfully monetised. According to Richards, this makes Trinidad and Tobago the world’s first gas economy.

“Indeed it represents the world’s very first gas economy in the sense that no other economy, developed or developing, had previously been created and continues to function successfully, which is dependant on natural gas as opposed to the many other economies which are mineral or petroleum, that is to say, oil, dependent. Not surprising it has become a model for other gas producing countries”

Also addressing the audience at the opening ceremony was Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China, Huang Xing who commented on Trinidad’s ministerial visits to China which created a strong foundation for lateral relations between China and Trinidad given the similar experiences shared by China and Trinidad in socio economic and cultural areas.

Additionally, Dr. Rolph Balgobin, Executive Director of the Lok Jack GSB stated that the graduate business school sought to build greater awareness in our society about the impact and influence of Chinese business and culture, seeking to mirror the People’s Republic of China in its predisposition towards building up rather than tearing down.
