The awards were held last Thursday June 21, 2007 at Lok Jack GSB’s Mt. Hope Campus. The Evening Business Conference was an opportunity for candidates to showcase the value of their research work to the business community. Participants were required to present in either of two formats: Oral Presentations or Poster Displays. It featured students of the Lok Jack GSB and Post Graduate Students of the UWI Department of Management spanning a range of programmes and concentrations. The competition was adjudicated by a panel comprising Professor Mark Oakley, Pro Vice Chancellor, Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom and Mr. Howard Dottin, a member of faculty and Chief Financial Officer of Guardian Holdings Ltd. Candidates were assessed for scholarship, Change Management, Innovation and Presentation. The event was endorsed by the business community through significant sponsorship from RBTT in the form of $15,000 in Roytrin Units, a laptop computer from Illuminat and book vouchers from RIK. Bringing remarks from the sponsors, Mr. Bruce Pollard, Manager, Solution Sales, Illuminat, applauded the Lok Jack GSB for celebrating the excellence of its students. He advised the audience to ‘take time to shake out your shoes on a regular basis’ as “it is not the journey that weighs us down but the pebbles which we acquire in our shoes along the way”. Ms Petra Koonoolal, Branch Manager, RBTT St. Augustine, spoke of the importance of teamwork and time management. She emphasised the need for consistent development of leaders and thinkers, stating that society could only benefit from a focus on education. The event was well attended by students currently preparing for the practicum (project) aspect of their programme and is expected to result in practica of even higher standard going forward. The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business at The University of the West Indies is pleased to announce the start of its DBA programme. Starting in 2008, this long awaited doctorate will augment the existing qualified management pool. The intent is to build the executive of tomorrow, capable of leading by framing and answering questions for breakthrough results. The Lok Jack GSB has a graduate pool of over 1,000 persons who would be eligible for the DBA. In addition, Masters Graduates from the Department of Management at the UWI and others drawn from related management disciplines would be eligible. Demand is therefore expected to be high and competition significant for the 10 phases or so that will be offered. “The launch of the DBA fulfils a promise made more than five years ago when I assumed leadership of the School,” stated Executive Director, Dr. Rolph Balgobin. “There is a clear need for us to go to the next level in building the Chief Executive of tomorrow. This research driven programme will help to take us there, and is in fact a key instrument of our regional development efforts.” The GSB will be partnering with its sister schools in the UWI network to deliver a Caribbean-wide programme filled with opportunities for networking and intra-regional collaboration. More information will be published soon, and we invite you to access

Research based on people skills by Harvard University, The Carnegie Foundation and The Stafford Research Institute and from observations and independent surveys done in Trinidad and Tobago, revealed the same. There is a basic lack of polish in relatively seasoned professionals, executives, and spouses and families who at times are woven into the socializing/business courtship. Also shown is the informality in our style of meeting, greeting, entertaining and dressing, paradoxically a new formality is needed when we are hosting or dealing with a diversity of people from other territories. The Arthur Lok Jack Graduate School of Business is pleased to announce the initiation of such a service through the Centre for Leadership Assessment and Development (CLA&D). While keeping some elements of a traditional finishing school, it will be more of a multi-cultural experience, a concept unique to the region that will bridge the gap between a person’s technical background with sound etiquette and protocol skills to make them polished, culturally sensitive, better communicators, and highly competitive in the international arena.
