Emancipation lunch held at Lok Jack GSB On Monday 2nd August, 2006, the Lok Jack GSB commemorated Emancipation Day with a staff lunch at the graduate school's restaurant. Many staff members dressed in African themed attire for the occasion. Kashta Ome of the Centre for Strategy and Competitiveness spoke briefly on the contribution of our African fore fathers. He said the significance of the day was not in the dress or food but in recognising the struggles of our ancestors and the impact they've had on our lives. Recalling that African slaves fought and died for their freedom 160 years ago, Dr. Rolph Balgobin, Executive Director of the Lok Jack GSB, said the commemoration of that event should be marked by fellowship and unity. He juxtaposed the liberation from physical slavery in 1834 with Bob Marley's call for mental liberation 130 years later, stating that though physical liberation was a reality, many still lived in bondage. Dr. Balgobin said the fellowship within the GSB and among its staff members ought to permeate into our communities for the advancement of Trinidad and Tobago. |
