The Ideas Forum:
Leading in a Male Dominated Environment

What makes a good leader?

On March 21st 200, the Lok Jack GSB hosted “The Ideas Forum: Leading in a Male Dominated Environment.”

Dr. Rhoda Reddock, Head, Centre for Gender and Development Studies, University of the West Indies gave opening remarks. She challenged that women’s equity was not simply the desire to achieve the same privileges that men had achieved but that it lay in a holistic social change which gave women the opportunity to successfully juggle career and family life.

Dr. Reddock also addressed the view of leadership as held by many as not being leadership but rather management. She emphasised the importance of distinguishing between leadership and management and the need to move from managing to leading as this was a key to organisational success.

Feature speaker, Jeanette Purcell, CEO, Association of MBAs, posed the question “what makes a good leader?”. Participant responses ranged from “fairness” to ‘visionary” to humility”. Purcell stated however, that to label leadership or good leadership would be to limit it. She explained that there was no “good leadership” model but that leadership was dependant on skill and personality and one’s ability to successfully utilise them.

Drawing on personal experience Purcell noted that listening was an underrated skill and that it allowed for leaders to recognise what was important. She also emphasised the need to communicate often, citing communication as a viable success tool.
